Home · Melasma Treatment in Bali — Dermatologist-Led
Melasma is not sun damage. Treating it as though it were is the most common reason it worsens — and in Bali's heat and UV, it is unusually stubborn.
Melasma is not sun damage, and treating it as though it were is the most common reason it gets worse. It is a chronic, relapsing pigmentary condition driven by hormones, heat and ultraviolet light — three things Bali supplies in abundance.
| Melasma | Sun spots / lentigines | |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Symmetrical patches, often cheeks, forehead, upper lip | Discrete individual spots, scattered |
| Edges | Diffuse, blending into surrounding skin | Sharply defined |
| Triggers | Pregnancy, hormonal contraception, heat, UV | Cumulative sun exposure |
| Behaviour | Fluctuates; relapses; can rebound after aggressive treatment | Stable; responds predictably to laser |
| Aggressive laser | Frequently makes it worse | Usually effective |
A dermatologist distinguishes these on examination, sometimes with Wood’s lamp assessment to establish whether pigment sits superficially or deeper in the dermis. Depth changes the prognosis and the plan substantially.
Melasma does not have a permanent cure. Any clinic promising to clear it in one session is either describing a different condition or setting you up for a rebound. Realistic goals are meaningful lightening, fewer relapses and better control — achieved over months, not weeks.

A hyperpigmentation result at Elea Clinic. Melasma is diagnosed and treated individually — the right protocol depends on depth and cause.
Where can I treat melasma in Bali?
At Elea Clinic, Denpasar, assessed and treated by dr. Jesslyn Amelia, Sp.D.V.E. Melasma should be diagnosed by a dermatologist before any device is used, because several treatments marketed for brightening can worsen it.
What is the difference between melasma and sun spots?
Melasma appears as symmetrical patches with diffuse edges, fluctuates with hormones and heat, and can worsen with aggressive laser. Sun spots are discrete, sharply defined, stable, and generally respond well to laser. They require different treatment.
Can melasma be cured permanently?
No. Melasma is a chronic relapsing condition that is managed rather than cured. Realistic goals are meaningful lightening, fewer relapses and long-term control.
Does laser make melasma worse?
It can. High energy and repeated passes over melasma frequently provoke rebound darkening. Where a device is used it must be at reduced energy with a modified technique.
Why is melasma harder to control in Bali?
Heat, humidity and a high ultraviolet index are all triggers, and visible light also contributes. Photoprotection has to be more rigorous here than in a temperate climate.
What sunscreen should I use for melasma?
A broad-spectrum sunscreen that also protects against visible light — typically a tinted formulation containing iron oxides — applied generously and reapplied through the day.
